When FIRE INDICATIONS are established:
The Baggage Compartment Smoke Detection System has the function of detecting smoke in the aft baggage compartment, which is located in an unpressurized area, aft to the pressure bulkhead. The Baggage compartment smoke detector assembly has 1 smoke sensor installed in the aft baggage compartment floor.
The baggage compartment smoke detector assembly has 2 smoke sensors on the same package, installed in the aft baggage compartment ceiling. When the output from smoke channel exceeds pre-determined level, an alarm signal is activated. The signals from the smoke detector are routed to the cockpit avionics system interface components that process and annunciate the necessary information to the flight crew.
A knob on the test control panel is used to do the test of the integrity of the detection system. With this selector in the FIRE position, when the START button is pressed a fire condition on the engines is simulated, and the fire alarms are activated.

The function of the fire extinguishing system is to discharge fire extinguishing agent (Halon) in areas where fire/overheat can occur. The fire extinguishing system consists of a single bottle that may be discharged in either left or right hand engine to extinguish fires. Commands for the engine fire extinguishing discharges are provided through the BOTTLE switch located on the ENG FIRE EXTINGUISHER control panel.
